Abstract:
In a modern industrial environment, manufacturing facilities include various systems and processes, such as assembly, welding, machining and cutting, which are used to produce parts and finished products. With the world’s transition to sustainable practices, encouraged by global and European regulations, companies need to align their operations to achieve sustainable development goals. These goals include reducing carbon emissions to zero, reducing the impact of climate change and achieving the “20 20 20” targets – a 20 percent reduction in energy consumption, a 20 percent increase in energy efficiency and a 20 percent use of renewable energy. In addition, the companies aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% compared to 1990 levels, maximize the use of renewable energy sources and reduce overall energy consumption by more than 30%.
Sustainable production is a comprehensive approach that includes evaluating both the products and the processes used with the aim of improving energy efficiency, using renewable resources and reducing waste. This concept encompasses the production of goods and services using processes and systems that do not pollute the environment, conserve energy and natural resources, are economically viable, safe for workers, communities and consumers, and socially beneficial. Sustainable production aims to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Sustainable production requires a comprehensive approach that includes several steps to make organizations more sustainable. Understanding sustainability as a holistic concept, assessing impacts, setting goals, engaging stakeholders, improving resource efficiency, using sustainable materials, managing energy and water, reducing waste, training employees, life cycle assessment, obtaining certification, monitoring and reporting, continuous improvement, collaboration and effective communication are key elements for achieving sustainable production. These practices enable companies to achieve environmental and business benefits while contributing to social responsibility and long-term sustainability.
